Money Makers? If you think this post is about sex and pretty women, you're wrong.
The online marketing world is literally obsessed with “eyeballs”. For example, if you want to sell ad space on your blog, you’ll have to show potential advertisers how many unique users are coming to the site each week–how many eyeballs are looking at your stuff.
If you’re not keeping track of the stats for your site, that’s the first thing to accomplish.
There is no doubt you have to get the eyeballs to your site, however, visitors are more than mere eyeballs. If you want to get beyond paid advertising to where the real money is, and find your cache of profitable customers, you’ll need to get beyond simplistic eyeball thinking and start addressing whole body.
Start with these.
The Brain
If you want to use content to create or support a profitable business, the most reliable strategy is to provide some real benefit to your audience. Features are not necessarily benefits. There are four questions you must ask to help your visitor become a customer.
It’s not that entertainment and fashion don’t work, they do. They create a simpleminded escape from thinking and for many that’s a benefit. Thinking can be work and doesn’t everyone want to escape working? After all, I live in the United States of Entertainment where more people vote on American Idol than the presidential election.
However, fashion and entertainment are inherently transitory (here today, gone tomorrow. Ninety-nine percent of today’s hot topics won’t be on anyone’s radar in 9 months. It’s better to Elvis than Millie Vanilli. And, if you don’t know who Millie Vanilli is, that proves my point.
The problem with alleviating boredom as a business model is that these customers are easily bored. They suffer from “entertain me attention deficit disorder”. If you have the same affliction, then you might be okay with fashion and entertainment because you’re constantly searching for something new to distract you from reality. You can write about the distractions you find.
For most of us the safest bet is to solve a significant problem that’s genuinely bothering your potential customers. Dieting, dating, marriage difficulties, business, self-improvement, and raising brats are continuously profitable topics for just that reason. There are always plenty of interesting problems to solve.
Now, I’m not saying to keep entertainment out of your blog and business completely. Write your content with some personality and feeling. That might be difficult if your content is about accounting, no offense to the accountants intended. You’ll surely need to cover the boring details, but do it with some style.
The brain wants good solutions to big problems. It also wants a little fun, interesting, novel content to think about. Mix in style with benefits for a treat no brain can resist.
Heart
The human heart was made to connect. When you’re creating your worldwide village of happy customers, they’ll want to know they’re part of something.
Create a method for customers to connect, to share experiences. You will get some bitching once in awhile. That’s why it’s called social networking, people grumble. The grumbling brings everybody closer including you.
True relationships include conflict, and that includes business relationships. It’s how we resolve conflicts that strengthens or weakens those bonds.
Care about your people, and let them know you care. A site or a business that’s founded on respect and deep affection for your audience is truly recession- and competitor-proof. It’s also just more fun to run.
Mouth
People not only want solutions, they want solutions they can share and talk about.
What service or product could you make so amazing that your customers couldn’t help but talk about it?
Having customers talk about your amazing feat is good, but it’s not the whole enchilada.
Zappo’s built a billion-dollar business from just plain loving their customers more than anyone else does. It’s too bad their commercials don’t communicate that benefit of doing business with them.
Pay attention to details. Improving what appear to be small issues to you can be huge to your customers.
Wouldn’t you like to hear your customers saying, “You’ve got to check out this site, it’s really cool. They . . . “?
Look after the whole customer
Everyone that has tried to make an online living has sought the elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, “multiple income streams.”
Most people think of this as creating dozens of little money-printing machines that make you rich while you lie around on the beach testing how much booze your liver can process. You know about the whole mini-site concept for Adsense, affiliate and other advertising income streams, right?
And, you can also look at it as taking care of the whole customer, and not just a little bit of one.
The best affiliate marketers understand this. They’re not looking for ways to monetize their list. They’re looking for ways to serve their customers.
Move beyond serving pages to eyeballs and on to serving people you care about. You’ll enjoy it more, and the odds are good you’ll make lots more money while you’re at it.
