Blog and Write For People

Blogging For People

One of the mistakes that many new web marketers make is focusing on making their website search engine optimized to the max with all the current myths and ideas about what the search bot or spider is looking for instead of blogging or writing for their visitors. Of course, it is important to take into account the known criteria that search engines use to determine the topic and relevance of the content. We all know that keywords, tags, keyword density and some speculation about latent semantic indexing (LSI) are important…

However, the most critical aspect of driving traffic to your site is good content written for people, not the search engines. If people find your content interesting and helpful, they will visit your site to see what is new. They will let others know about it through social networking that drives more traffic. Write GOOD content!

There is no doubt that search engines play an important role in bringing some traffic to a website. The content on the site either keeps them there or not. If the content is not what they are looking for, they move onto the next search engine listing.

Search engines don’t know precisely what someone wants. They only know what was typed into the search box and attempt to match those words with the content on websites. It is important to use keywords and phrases that precisely match the content so when a visitor lands on your site they find what they want and stick around to read it.

Don’t over stuff a page with keywords. Choose between 2 and 9 keyword phrases that reflect exactly what your content is about. Use your primary keyword or phrase in the content to achieve a total density from 2% to 4%. This includes having the keyword in the heading (h1 tag), the first 1/3 of the content, the body and the closing paragraph of the content. If there are graphics on the page add the primary keyword as alt text to it. A word of caution here, the percentages of 2 to 4 are the current assumptions based on analysis of high ranking pages across the web. Only the folks at the search engines know the exact numbers and they aren’t talking.

Do your keyword or keyword phrase research as you build your site. That way you will not have to rewrite your content later. However, “Better late than never.” is always appropriate. Check your exisitng pages to see if they are search engine friendly…

And, write good content!

  2. I agree about writing good content – there\’s nothing worse than stumbling across those nonsensical computer-generated \"posts\" filled with keywords but totally lacking in meaning.
Even more important than the on-page stuff you\’ve mentioned though is getting relevent links with the right anchor text. Search engines are rightly cynical, and place more faith in what others say about your site than what you yourself say.
