More back links! I need more, more, more!!

Writing and publishing online articles is a good way to get back links to your website, as long as you follow some rules. There are 4 rules for article marketing shown below that need to be followed to optimize the affect of publishing. Most article publishing directories don’t permit links in the article or even a mention of a website name or URL. However, all of the directories do allow back links in the author’s bio or resource box that is shown at the end of every article that is published. And, when readers link to your article or website you gain search engine recognition.

Here are 4 rules for article marketing:

Rule 1. Don’t get caught by the “duplicate content penalty” that Google and Yahoo impose. Make your content original and unique. When your articles or web pages aren’t original and unique they can be ignored by the search engines. The worse thing that happens is when your content is copied and the copy is assigned the original status and yours is labeled the duplicate. Always make sure you include the date in the article or on the web page.

Rule 2. Back link to your website using your keywords in the text, if this is permitted by the publisher. Text links using the keywords and phrases reinforces the appearance to the search engine’s spider that your article is in fact about the keywords.

Rule 3. Include your keywords in the article title. It is preferable that they are the first words in the title, but anywhere in the title is better than nowhere.

Rule 4. Try to publish your article on directories and social networks that have a RSS feed. Each subscriber that picks up your article and refers back to it on their site provides another potential back link.

The primary weaknesses of traditional article marketing:

Weakness 1: Duplicate content is always a weakness. When you spin ten versions of your article for ten article directories, there is still only 10 opportunities for your article to show up in the search engines. If another site picks up your article and doesn’t spin it before publishing, it’ll will be seen as duplicate content anyway. Both sites suffer. Do yourself a favor, always spin the article.

Weakness 2: Again, most article directories only allow back links in the author’s resource or bio box at the end of the article. It looks a little unnatural to the search engines.

Weakness 3: Duplicate content abounds in most article directories. At the very least, there is a lot of similar content. The search engines still crawl the article directories and index the content. However, the more a subject is written about the less value each article is assigned. If your article is good, readers will pick it up and link to it. The more links the article gets the higher the search engine value. The higher the search engine value the higher the back link value to your site.
