Website Link Building

Building incoming website links of high quality can be a daunting task. You can search for other websites in your niche and contact the webmaster asking to exchange links. You can visit and post on a lot of blogs leaving your website URL in the comment. However, many blog sites now employ a “no follow” website link building widget, plugin or strategy that either prevents your URL from showing in the comment or, if it does show, it won’t trackback for a link.

Many of the high ranking blogs in many niches use the “no follow” strategy because of the huge amount of spam comments they were receiving. You’re saying “Isn’t that what the spam filters like Akismet are suppose to do?”. Yes, but the filters only hold the comment for moderation or flag it as possible spam. The webmaster stills looks through the “comments on hold” and decides if they are or are not spam. It’s time consuming. And, you don’t know if there is a really great comment that you want to show unless you review them all.

The other alternative is to allow all comments and block trackbacks, back links and pings from comments. In other words “no follow”. Unfortunately, like so many other situations, a few spammers have hurt everybody.

Easy One Way Inbound Links

One of the simpliest methods to build inbound website links is to get your blog or website listed in the appropriate directories.

Directories were the first search engines. If you wanted a website on a specific topic you visited the directory, chose a catagory of listing and entered some keywords. Any websites with the associated keywords would appear. Very similar to today’s search engines. However, the listing were restricted to those sites that were submitted to the directories for inclusion. And, were approved by the directory to be listed. Many directories still use humans to review a submitted website and approve it before it makes it into the directory.

Although search engines have taken some of the search traffic from directories, they still provide a valuable service. There are directories that specialize in nearly every type of subject. And, other directories are genral in nature that include websites in thousands of categories and listings.

Most directories have a page rank of at least 4. That means if your site carrries a PR of 4 or less you are getting a great inbound link from the directory. You want to list your site with directories that have PR equal to and/or higher than your site.

Here is a list of some directories that you can look at and submit to if they are relevant to your niche. Don’t submit your site to a directory that specializes in medical sites if yours is about shoes and handbags.

I haven’t had time to check out all of these sites. Some may be junk, some maybe gone and some may not be directories at all. I gathered them from search engines, articles and recommendations from commenters.  I don’t take responsibility for the accuracy or content of any of them. You must check them out for yourself.

Conclusion

Spend a little time each day checking out the directories and submit to the ones that are a good fit. Try to do at least 5 submissions everyday until you get through the list.

Write your general submission information in Notepad or some other basic editor. You can then copy and paste the information into the various directorys’ submission form. Or, if you use Google or Yahoo toolbar, they can fill out some of the info. I use a free program called Roboform . I would be completely lost without it. It keeps track of all my logins and form fill-in information. You can download your copy by clicking on the word Roboform. It’s free for the basic version.

  6. Hi Hal,
Great article. In your reply to Vinay did you mean to say NOT wishing? Cause I’ve discovered that no amount of wishing for something helps. There is always effort required. Have a great day :)

  10. Hi jabaz007,
PR determines the position your site shows up in a Google search. The higher the PR the higher up your site is listed. You want to be on the first page of search results. That’s positions 1 thru 10. Many people never get past the first page of search results. The more people that see your site on the first page the more people that might visit your site.
    Hope this helps.
