What To Blog About?

May 4, 2009 · Filed Under Article Writing, Making Money, Writing Copy

As some of you know I do a lot of freelance copywriting for websites, blogs, press releases, sales letters and article directories, etc. Last week a client asked me THE question I get at least once a week, “How do you know what to blog or write about?”. I write about what the client wants me to write about. I’m a fricking freelance writer.

No, no, no he spews out with some disdain. “I mean for your own stuff, you know for your blog.”. “Oh! I write about people that ask me stupid questions”, I said. He chuckled and stared at me with that look of anticipation a child has on Christmas morning when staring at the presents under the tree. I felt like shit. This guy was serious. “Well, I write about whatever I feel like writing about.”

This blog is about online marketing and making money online, so I write about topics related to ethical ways to make a living on the web. I write about SEO and SEM, effective copywriting, link building, article marketing, traffic generation and tracking and a dozen other web marketing related topics. I even do reviews on get rich quick scams, WordPress plugins and web development software and applications.

I write about what I feel like writing about. And, that is the best answer I can give my client and anyone else.

I’ve read dozens of articles and posts on this topic from bloggers that are considered to be the best. They all say the same arcane and inane things:

  • What do you know?
  • What do you love?
  • What interests you?
  • What do you want to share with people?
  • Will you do it for free?
  • Blah, blah, blah!!

Cheese and crackers! My experience tells me when someone asks “THE question” they don’t have the answer to these other questions either and probably never will. They know stuff and stuff interests them, but they don’t love it and they don’t necessarily feel like sharing it. And, no they don’t want to do it for free. If they did they wouldn’t be asking the question. They would be writing with enthusiasm and sharing everything they know.

Here is the bottom line and pass this along, please. If you like to write, you will write whether you make money or not. Making money is great, However, writers write because they love to write. If you think you need to write to make money because everyone is saying you need to have a blog and you need to write articles and you need to join and post on social networks, but you hate to write, you’re in deep shit. You writing will show that you have no passion for it and everyone will see it lacks passion.

It has nothing to do about what you like or love or want to share and has everything to do with loving to write. I’ve written about a thousand subjects including wedding preparations, burglar alarms and space travel on a light thread. None of these did I have a love of, knew anything about or wanted to share with anyone. I researched and researched some more and then I began to write. Each client for those topics loved the result and have hired me to do additional writing. I love to write.

If you need to write to make money, but hate to write, find someone that loves to write. Don’t beat yourself up if you’re not a writer. Most people aren’t, they hire someone who is.
