Making Money Online – Part 3

Blogging for Big Bucks

Nearly every mom on the web has staked her claim to a blog where she can write and bloviate about whatever topic comes to mind. She can blog about her baby taking her first steps, or how she wants to leave her company job for more freedom as a work-at-home-mom (wahm).

However many moms aren’t monetizing their blogs, and that’s almost a crime because there’s a lot of money making potential in blogs. There are two basic ways you can blog and you have to decide which way works for you. If you’re serious about blogging for bucks, as many netpreneurs are – utilize both ways!

Free Blog Sites

The first method is to go to a site like Blogger.com and create a blog that you want to start monetizing. You need to decide the topics you think you’d feel comfortable blogging about on a regular basis?

If soccer isn’t your thing, then it’s not smart to blog about it, because you’ll become bored with it and your lack of enthusiasm will probably shine through. But if you’re crazy about bargain hunting, then by all means create a blog about that topic!

Go to Blogger.com and create a free account and choose to “Create a Blogger account.” You’ll need provide your email address, a password, and a display name for yourself. Next, you’ll need to come up with a name for your blog. If your goal is to make money from it, you’ll want it to show up high in the search engines results, therefore you’ll want to use keywords related to your niche.

If your blog is about bargaining hunt, as mentioned in my previous example, then your blog title should be something like, “How to Hunt Down the Best Bargains Online and Off.”  You will also need to name the URL for your blog site. It will look like this: http://[NameYourBlog].blogspot.com Yours could be: http://BargainHunting.blogspot.com

Here is a screen shot of a blogger blog I set up about marketing. I customized the look of the site so don’t go looking for it in the standard templates Blogger offers.

Next on your task list is to choose a look, or as Blogger calls it a template, for your blog. There are several options that you can choose. Once you choose a template your blog is created and all you have to do is start posting. As with any social networking site, your content needs to be valuable to the community for it to be effective.

Monetizing your blog

There are several ways to make money on your blog. If you have your own product to sell that’s an excellent way. For example, an ebook about clothes bargaining hunting. You can sign up for a Google Adsense count. It’s free to sign up and blogger will help walk you through the process, as well as placing the Adsense ads on your blog.

You may want to sell products from companies as an affiliate, such as eBay or Amazon. There is sure to be an affiliate program available that relates to your blog. While you’re writing valuable content, you also want to keep in mind the search engine rankings. Write your content so that it uses your keywords or phrases in the post title, first and last paragraph and often throughout the post. However, don’t cram your keywords into every sentence. You should have a keyword density of 5% to 10%. That way, when someone searches for that topic in Google, there’s a good chance your blog will show up on the first or second page of the search results after awhile.

Becoming an expert

You want to use your blog to become an expert in your chosen niche. You can write product reviews and post links to products that you sell. These can be your products or affiliate products. Using the example, you might write a blog entry about finding wedding dress bargains and then link to an ebook about great weddings on a budget – or a wedding dress company on eBay or a wedding supply affiliate site you  belong to. Your expertise and helpfulness is what earns you money!

There are other several free blogging sites and each has a somewhat of a different set-up. I used Blogger.com because it’s owned by Google and is constantly being crawled by the Google spiders for new content. However making money from any of the free blog site is basically the same. You link to items that will produce an income for you and blog about it like an expert!

  2. Great series. I don’t know that I particularly agree with the keyword density thing these days, though. Its been changed around so much, it seems like pages rank the best when they’re just written naturally while keeping in mind related keywords. No need to worry about making sure your keyword appears X number of times based on the length of the article, I think.

  6. Hi Noah,
Yes, writing naturally is an important factor and not only keeping in mind your keywords but actually using them scattered throughout the post or article. Although there are changes that take place in the search engine algorithms all the time. There probably is no one outside of Google that knows if there is a keyword density target or what it may be, we do know the bots and spiders are designed to confirm the content against the meta keywords and description. Therefore, it’s important to use those words and phrases at the start, the end and sprinkled throughout. There is also a large disagreement in the SEO community on how well the Latent Semantic Index algorithm works. Using related or similar keywords is a positive step, but shouldn’t replace the actual keywords in total. Keep it natural and keyword focused I believe is the smart choice.
    Best regards,
    Hal
