Is Microsoft’s Bing Search Engine A Google Killer?

Bing versus Google

On June 3rd Microsoft launched its new search engine Bing.com. They spent tons of money on advertising it and a lot of hype and some criticism followed from the blogosphere. As with everything new some folks like it and some folks don’t.

The real question is “Will it have an impact on the number of people searching with Google and Yahoo?” I believe it’s too early to make predictions.

A lot depends on the relevance of the returned search results, of course, and if search traffic increases will Microsoft add the needed hardware to produce fast results. Right now Bing is fast. In fact, it’s as speedy as Google. The relevancy of results in the trial searches I’ve done have been good.

So, on speed I give it 4.5 stars and 4.0 stars on relevant results. I performed some searches without using any limiting parameters such as “quotes”, [brackets], or modifiers like intitle:, allintitle:, inanchor:, etc. One of my searches was “articles on —” and the first 30 plus results were actually results of articles. After that it began to list results for the subject that were not articles. I actually consider this a pretty decent outcome without needing to use limiting parameters or modifiers. When I did the same search with Google without limits, there were non-article results returned on the first page.

The Google non-article results may be influenced by their page ranking system. That is just an assumption on my part. It pushes higher page ranked sites/pages to the top of its results as long as any of the subject terms are present on the website. Again, no limitations used when searching with Google.

Traffic Stats

I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on my site stats for search engine generated traffic to see if Bing is sending any visitors my way. The results so far are disappointing. The stats for this week shows zero Bing referrals. Google was #1 with 1384 and MSN Live with 576. Yahoo was #3 was a disappointing and miniscule 47 referrals. Maybe Yahoo should have went for the Microsoft buyout!:-) Now don’t laugh at my visitor stats, okay. If I had feelings you could hurt them. Considering my first post on this site was on 12/01/08 and I haven’t taken the time to promote it like I should, it’s doing pretty good. It has an Alexa ranking of 556,724 out of hundreds of millions of websites. When it gets into to the tens of thousands, it’s for sale. lol

I use an onsite plugin to keep track of the stats as well as Google Analytics. This allows me to compare data for accuracy and make changes, if needed. The data from both was very similar, so I know that the plugin wasn’t ignoring any visits through Bing. That is not likely since it records all referrals and no blocked IP addresses have been initiated except for mine.

Final Thoughts

So far I like the Bing interface, speed and accuracy. It has an interesting information feature on the right side of each result. Move your mouse over a result and then to the right of the result and an information box opens with the description and a list of the other topics covered on that web page. This could prove to be useful. Bing is okay and I see myself using it on a regular basis.

Let me know what your experience with Bing is.

  2. Well, they’ve got a long way to go to beat Google! Mind you, Google started at the bottom long after Yahoo was well established, and look at them now. Micro$oft certainly has the financial muscle and technical expertise to make it happen, so let’s see.

I still haven’t had any referrals from Bing either!

  4. This may be late, but I think the referrals that said MSN Live in your analytics probably refer to Bing traffic. MSN and Live search are both “powered by” Bing now, and have been since the beginning of June.

I know that Eloqua, for example, is still showing Bing traffic as “MSN Live.” Google Analytics, on the other hand, updated it to say Bing a few days after the early release. But my Google Analytics still says I’m getting minor amounts of traffic from MSN and Live search, so I’m not sure where the distinction lies.

What about you? Are you going to have a follow up on your Bing traffic?

  6. Hi Anthony,
Yea, I’m sure your correct on the MSN Live.
My Google Analytics is okay. I’m still having MSN show up on in my Statcounter data. The StatPress Plugin here now shows Bing.
I figure a few more weeks or months it’ll all be hashed out.
    Take care my friend,
    Hal
