SEO and being Number 1 on Google

SEO and Page 1 Search Results

Last Friday I wrote a post about 12 SEO steps business blogs should take to improve their position with the search engines and get on page 1 of Google. All good advice that I heard at SES in March.

Now that you know 12 more tips and tricks to increase your blog’s search engine ranking, what are you going to do when you’re on page 1 of Google for your keywords? Was getting on page 1 of the search results your goal? It was. Okay then, you’ve done your job. You can sit back and bask in self-adoration. Maybe you should throw yourself a huge party.

Being on page 1 ain’t jacksh*t.

If you have a blog for business you better have something up your sleeve to take advantage of the page 1 position. In other words, what do you want searchers to do when they visit your blog? Is that not the purpose of blogging for business? Getting business.

All the work people and companies put into getting that coveted page 1 position doesn’t mean jacksh*t if they can’t get them to do something once they land on their blog. The work as only just begun. The hardest thing to accomplish is getting visitors take the action you want.

SAO Needed?

I’m calling it Site Action Optimization (SAO). Companies should spend more time on optimizing their website to get visitors to take the desired action than they do on getting to page 1 of Google. A clear and decisive plan for action must be developed and implemented. I don’t care if you want to grow your email list, give away millions of copies of your viral ebook, or become a gazillionaire selling products, your site must be optimized to get the action. Otherwise, being on page 1 of a Google search gets you bragging rights only.

Get help!

Contrary to your narcissistic beliefs you can’t be excellent at everything. Every successful business person knows the limits of their talent. They hire other people with specialized skills to complement their own talents. It’s called outsourcing.

I have not one artistic bone in my body. I can’t draw a circle with a compass. I wish I could! I simply don’t have that talent. If I need a logo for a website or an eye catching custom header, I hire a graphic artist. If the graphic artist needs optimized web content they hire me or another web copywriter.

Outsourcing work is not as expensive as you may think. I can get a custom logo made for under $10.00, an article to submit to article directories for as little as $5.00. If I need 20 articles I can usually get them done for $1.00 per article.

Freelancers abound on the web. This is especially true in this bad economy. There is a huge amount of talent that got walking papers from their employer within the past few months. Special talent is available and cheap on sites like oDesk, Elance, ScriptLance and Guru.com. If all else fails you can place an ad on Craigslist or USfreeads.com.

I prefer to use services like oDesk and Elance. You can read feedback from previous customers of a freelancer before you hire them. The service provides secure payment methods and problem resolution help. You pay a small charge to the service when the job is done and you’re satisfied. However, the fee is minimal and worth the benefits provided.

When you hire off of a classified ad you’re on your own. Most, if not all, of the freelancers from classified ads want a downpayment before they go to work. A reasonable request since they don’t want to perform the work and never get paid. The freelancer may also ask you to accept an agreement or contract posted on their website. Always read the entire thing carefully before agreeing. Recent news events on the Craigslist murder is more extreme than never getting the outsourced work completed. But, it proves the point that you are on your own and all the risk is yours.
