14 Tips On Building Links

January 30, 2009 · Filed Under Link Building · 3 Comments

Most people know that building links drives more traffic to their site, it will also improve your Google page rank (PR) and your Technorati authority. Both of these are critical factors when determining the value of your site. The greater the value of your site the more you can charge for placed ads. The easier it is to get top notch professionals in your niche to write guest posts, agree to interviews and provide content for free. The higher your page rank and quality score the less you pay for adwords. High value = higher return.

You’re probably saying, how do I go about building links? There are many ways to increase links to your site. A few are pretty darn easy, others take a little more work. And, all of methods on this list can and will build links to your site.

Spend a little time everyday working on building links.

14 Tips On How To Build Links

1)  Leave Comments – Part of an everyday activity for a blogger is to comment. Climb on to the top commentator list. This will provide you with a link.

2)  Guest Blog – Offer to write for another blog in exchange for a link back. This is a little more work, but it does build your site’s visibility and increase traffic.

3)  Content – This can’t be stressed enough. Unique, fresh, interesting, and useful content will get you tons of links. Content is king and since you are suppose to be blogging, write something that people want to know. It’s probably not what you had for breakfast unless your blog is a food review or recipe site. Put the breakfast thing on Twitter, so we know you’re still alive, and write something else for the blog.

4) Create Controversy – This works for some blogs. You’re bound to have a great conversation and people will link to you whether they agree, or not.

5) Something For Nothing – Give away something free. Something of value, please. Folks will put links on their site back to your site about the freebie. Everybody likes a freebie!

6) E-Book – This goes along with something for nothing. However, it does deserve it’s own mention. A lot  of people I know have great success with ebooks. And it’s not as difficult as you may think. If you have several posts about the same topic, you can combine them into an ebook.

7) Have A Contest – Organize a contest. Not only will this build links, but also drive traffic to your site. Ask people to link to you to be entered into the contest. Make it worth their while though. I have to admit, though, I haven’t had much luck with this. The prize value line keeps going up and I think some people may think that the prize isn’t awarded or goes to a friend of the contest holder. It’s difficult to overcome the widespread skepticism.

8) Amazon – Is your blog about books or products? Write a review on the Amazon site with a link back to your site. Make the Amazon review short and put something at the end to the effect “you can learn more about this product here” and link to your site. Make sure there is more information about the item on your site. Never mislead your visitors.

9) Join A Few Social Networks and Groups – Myspace, Facebook, Hubpages, Mashable, Technorati and gazillion others. Look around and find a two or three that suits you. OH! And,Twitter

10) Give Away Your Posts – Let others use your posts on their site with a link back to your site. Spread the love baby. You will benefit from it in multiple ways. And, you don’t have to give everything away, just a few posts here and there.

11) Swap Content – Swap content along with link back. That gives you an extra, no work, post to use along with a link. And, maybe a new blogging friend.

12) Link Luv – Be the Santa Claus of link love and give out lots of links. Other folks will take notice and return the link love back to you.

13) Create Blog Themes – If you know CSS and PHP, you can create themes. Each theme contains links to your sites in the footer along with your copyright information. You can also install a favicon in the style sheet that links to your site. If you give the themeaway and it becomes popular, you’ll be building links from around the world. There are many free resources where you can learn the necessary coding skills, if your interested enough to try. W3Schools has a huge amount of free tutorials on all types of coding.

14) Get A Remote Blog – Start a blog on Blogger, LiveJournal, Xanga or WordPress.com, and link back to your main site using your keywords in the remote blog content. Hyperlink back to the posts on your main blog. I don’t know if AOL still has a free blog site. If you’re an AOL customer, check it out.

While there are many more ways to get links, these few should get you going. Do you have a tip on how to build links? Let me know and I’ll add it to the list and Give You A Link. I use ContentLuv in my comments sections so you can automatically gain a link for each comment you leave.

Website Link Building

Building incoming website links of high quality can be a daunting task. You can search for other websites in your niche and contact the webmaster asking to exchange links. You can visit and post on a lot of blogs leaving your website URL in the comment. However, many blog sites now employ a “no follow” website link building widget, plugin or strategy that either prevents your URL from showing in the comment or, if it does show, it won’t trackback for a link.

Many of the high ranking blogs in many niches use the “no follow” strategy because of the huge amount of spam comments they were receiving. You’re saying “Isn’t that what the spam filters like Akismet are suppose to do?”. Yes, but the filters only hold the comment for moderation or flag it as possible spam. The webmaster stills looks through the “comments on hold” and decides if they are or are not spam. It’s time consuming. And, you don’t know if there is a really great comment that you want to show unless you review them all.

The other alternative is to allow all comments and block trackbacks, back links and pings from comments. In other words “no follow”. Unfortunately, like so many other situations, a few spammers have hurt everybody.

Easy One Way Inbound Links

One of the simpliest methods to build inbound website links is to get your blog or website listed in the appropriate directories.

Directories were the first search engines. If you wanted a website on a specific topic you visited the directory, chose a catagory of listing and entered some keywords. Any websites with the associated keywords would appear. Very similar to today’s search engines. However, the listing were restricted to those sites that were submitted to the directories for inclusion. And, were approved by the directory to be listed. Many directories still use humans to review a submitted website and approve it before it makes it into the directory.

Although search engines have taken some of the search traffic from directories, they still provide a valuable service. There are directories that specialize in nearly every type of subject. And, other directories are genral in nature that include websites in thousands of categories and listings.

Most directories have a page rank of at least 4. That means if your site carrries a PR of 4 or less you are getting a great inbound link from the directory. You want to list your site with directories that have PR equal to and/or higher than your site.

Here is a list of some directories that you can look at and submit to if they are relevant to your niche. Don’t submit your site to a directory that specializes in medical sites if yours is about shoes and handbags.

I haven’t had time to check out all of these sites. Some may be junk, some maybe gone and some may not be directories at all. I gathered them from search engines, articles and recommendations from commenters.  I don’t take responsibility for the accuracy or content of any of them. You must check them out for yourself.
