If It’s Dead Should You Bury It?

June 18, 2009 · Filed Under Web 2.0

Question: Do you blog just to express yourself? You don’t really care if anyone reads it or if anyone ever leaves a comment about your self-expressions. You gain all you need from simply putting your thoughts into cyberspace. You feel the warm glow around your heart and your mind is now at ease (at least for a short time). Then this post isn’t really for you. You’re welcome to continue reading and I hope you do because I’m the type of blogger that passes along ideas, strategies, tips, tricks and advice. I want people to read my words and leave their thoughts and ideas in the comments.

Lets imagine you’re the same type of blogger as me. Maybe you’re looking to make a little money from your blog. You wouldn’t mind it the least little bit if visitors bought something from you or click on your PPC ads.

Now. lets imagine that isn’t happening. You’re getting 10 visitors a day, no comments and money.
So what do you do?

The answer is simple, but the actual act is difficult. You do to your blog what we do to any animal that is suffering and can’t be helped…put a bullet in its head.

Just Shoot Your Blog in the Head!

This can a very hard task to carry out as we elevate and romantize our efforts. We are after all “bloggers” The highest order of Web 2.0 royalty. How can we possibly dethrone our selfand not take a death blow to the ego? You can’t. However, you can rise from the ashes as the Phoenix did.

Your blog is nothing more than a transportation method for your ideas. The purpose of every method of transportation is the same: to transport something, duh. The purpose of a blog is transport your ideas and information across the world.

Question: What happens when your car no longer works? You take it to the repair shop. The repair shop diagnosis is terminal.  It’s time for the metaphorical bullet to the head; the car goes to the big junkyard in the sky. It’s dead and needs to be put down. What are you supposed to do when your blog stops transporting your ideas across the world?

Again, it’s pretty simple. You do what tens of thousands of bloggers do each week:

You quit. You have probably thought about it. You don’t want to be a quitter. However, you no longer get that thrill or excitement when you pull up your blog and open a post screen. You think “Awh, what’s the point. This vehicle has gone as far as it can.

How Do You Know When It’s Time to Quit Your Blog?

I’ve had several blogs that I quit writing. There was the one for healthy recipes. And then there was a few on speed cleaning and organizing. I know there were a few others. I just don’t remember them. I buried them with a few final words of sympathy and moved on until I found something to write about that people wanted to read.

So here are some of the telltale signs that I used to tell whether or not to put my blog down:

  • You don’t get 12 visitors a day. There are no comments, no tweets, or subscribers from your visitors
  • There aren’t any blogs that will link with yours
  • You can’t muster any enthusiasm to write about the blog topic.

If you feel like this about your blog, then you should probably quit now or find another topic to blog about. Don’t beat a dead horse! It won’t make it run any faster or better. IT’S DEAD.

Most of us have heard the old saying that success is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. In other words, persistence is the key to success and happiness. If you just keep trying it will get better. That is not necessary so if nobody is interested in your information.

If you want to be successful at blogging, then persistence is needed. However, don’t waste your time and energy on a blog topic that’s going nowhere. Find something new to blog about and start a new one.

When you car was beyond salvation did you stop driving? No. You went and bought another car.
