Write For People and SEO

Search engines can be one of the most important ways for bringing new and free customers to a site. Many people who have never heard of your site will use a search engine to find what they are looking for, at your site or at someone else’s.  But unfortunately, a search engine is not psychic and not very intuitive either. They will not be able to find what people are actually looking for but rather what they are asking for.

But just how do you know what people are looking for?  There are a number of different ways in which you can get ahead of the competition in relation to people’s search habits.  There are many effective programs around and one of these is WordTracker, which can be found at WordTracker.com. There is a free version with limited results or you are able to license this program either by the day, week, month or year. What this program does is provide you with feedback in relation to key phrases that you submit to it. You can determine the number of searches, related search terms and potential long tail keywords. It will also make recommendations in relation to similar key phrases, and you are then able to test them against the most important search engines and directories on the web.

WordTracker tells you approximately how many people are searching for a particular phrase, and how much competition there is from other sites. Once this is done then WordTracker assigns each phrase with a Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI) ranking.

Google also provides some free keyword tools that can be very helpful in determining competition and search counts. You can find this tool here: Google Keyword Tool. Google’s Traffic Estimator is used to determine how many searches have been conducted for keywords and keyword phrases. You can access the Traffic Estimator here: Google Traffic Estimator

When you use the phrases that attract the most interest, but the least competition, appropriately throughout your site in both copy and page titles, it will make it more receptive to the search engines and directories.  Then, when it comes time for people who are looking for a particular product or service, your site should be one of the first they see in their search results. You should try to get your site listed in the first ten search results. Or, what is commonly referred to as “on page 1″.

There is some disagreement among search engine optimization (SEO) gurus if it makes any difference as to whether your site is listed as # 1 or # 10  as long as it is on the first page. My feeling is being in the top five produces better results than being in the bottom five. My experiences shows there to be insignificant results between position 1 and 5.

The best time to do keyword or keyword phrases research is when you are first building your site. This prevents having to rewrite your copy later on. It can be done at any time. As the cliché says, “Better late than never.” If you are not researching what it is your customers want, your competition is.
